In the course of time and space, the soul reincarnates, living different existences and lives: therefore, what we are today, in this life, is the result of all that we have done in all previous lives, living life after life as a man, woman, child and so on (just as we do today, but in different times: we can see ourselves again in the Middle Ages, in the Victorian era or even further back!). The difficulties we face in the present life are connected to the events we experienced in lives in the past : The opposite of karma is chance, and in life nothing is left in the hands of chance. In fact, either any difficulties we encounter are related to divine laws that, for some reason, we have not followed throughout our lives. Consequently, in the present existence we are called upon to compensate for these shortcomings through illness, obstacles, suffering, dysfunctional relationships and so on. Whether in the past we have been victims or perpetrators toward other people or ourselves, the best way to free ourselves from karmic and emotional blockages is through awareness of who we were, what we did and/or suffered, so as to permanently dissolve the ties to illnesses, dysfunctional people, and so on. The people we cross in our path are never random; they are bound to us by karmic ties that require to be resolved. For example, pe may have suffered injustice, such as abandonment or violence, and this could explain fears rooted in the present, such as fear of being alone or deep resentment toward a person, for example, our executioner. Or we might have acted as executioners, and in that case, the person to whom we have wronged in the past in the present life will feel connected to us by feelings of hatred or repression.
