It was associated with the goddess Athena, a symbol of wisdom and strategy, and was thought to help philosophers and orators express themselves with clarity and truth. Some indigenous peoples of South America believed that sodalite was a sacred stone that could connect the wearer with ancestral wisdom and earth spirits. It was often used by shamans to enter trance states and communicate with the spirit world. The Vikings are said to have used stones similar to sodalite (or hackmanite itself, a variety of it) as part of their navigational tools.
