During the Middle Ages, Amethyst was more expensive than diamond, and it was used by the high clergy and nobility: it was worn as a ring by cardinals, kings and dukes as a symbol of absolute power because it was believed that those who knew the spirit could dominate even matter. “Amethystos” means one who does not get drunk, and it was believed that putting an amethyst crystal in the glass containing alcohol prevented people from getting drunk. Legend has it that Amethyst is the name of a nymph who, fleeing from Bacchus (in the Roman religion God of the grape harvest, amusement and pleasure of the senses), invoked Diana (Roman goddess protector of animals and women) who managed to turn her into a crystal. The color purple, on the other hand, is attributed to her by Bacchus who, enraged, threw the chalice full of wine onto the stone.
